In 1929, Gala Amusement Park made the change into a 105-acre private flying field that was named after Glenn H. Curtiss. It was eventually re-named North Beach Airport. By 1937, the city took over the airport and added even more acres. It opened in 1939 under the name New York Municipal Airport-LaGuardia Field. Finally, in 1953, it received its final name, LaGuardia Airport, after New York City's former mayor Fiorello La Guardia.
